Al-Furaih Criticizes Six-Month Validity for Imported Eggs
Agricultural expert Eng. Mohammad Al-Fraih expressed his surprise that the relevant authorities have allowed imported eggs to enter local markets with a shelf life of six full months from the date of production, instead of three months as required of national poultry companies. Al-Fraih said yesterday: “We were recently surprised by the arrival of eggs from Turkey, Sudan, Jordan, and Ukraine, with a shelf life for consumption and industrial use set at six months, while the Ministry of Commerce, the Municipality, and the Food Authority set a period of only three months for fresh Kuwaiti eggs,” wondering why these authorities approved their importation in this manner. He noted that the shelf life of eggs in the United States, for example, is only 28 days, and it is recommended to consume them within this period rather than after, even if stored in home refrigerators or those of confectionery factories, noting that it is preferable to consume them within one month of their production date rather than from the date they are displayed or released to the market, provided they are stored at a temperature between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius. He commended the relevant authorities’ requirement to record the production date and expiration date on every fresh egg in the country.
